Electronic Structures & Periodic Properties of Elements

Question:
Which observations and or theories support the wave nature of light?
Answer:
Optical phenomena, such as reflection/refraction
Light passing through narrow, closely spaced, slits, produces interference
patterns
James clerk Maxwell's theory of electromagnetic radiation

,Question:
Which observations and or theories support the particle nature of light?
Answer:
Newtons law of motion (light was streams of extremely tiny particles traveling
at high speeds according to his laws of motion)
Photoelectric effect
Black body radiation

Question:
What are the main features from Bohr's model of the hydrogen atom that
apply to all models used to describe the distribution of electrons in an atom?
Answer:
The energies of electrons, or energy levels, and an atom are quantized
And electrons energy increases within increasing distance from the nucleus
The discrete energies of light emitted by elements in an excited state result
from quantized electronic energies

,Question:
State the general trends for the atomic radius and explain the reason behind
the trend
Answer:
Increases down a column and decreases from left to right
The stronger pole, or higher effective nuclear charge, experienced by electrons
on the right side of the periodic table, draws them closer to the nucleus,
making the atomic radius smaller
Going down a group, the size of the atom and its radius must increase as we
increase the distance of the outer most electrons from the nucleus. More
electron shells results in a weaker attraction of the outer most electrons to the
nucleus (Zeff) as you go from top to bottom

Question:
State the general trends for Zeff and explain the reasoning behind the trend
Answer:
Decreases down a column and increases from left to right
Zeff increases as we move from left to right across a period because Z
continues to increase by one, but the shielding increases only slightly
The more core electrons and atom has the greater the shielding, thus going
down a group the Zeff decreases

, Question:
State the general trends for ionization energy and explain the reasoning
behind the trend
Answer:
Decreases down a column and increases from left to right
For larger atoms, the most loosely bound electron is located farther from the
nucleus and so it's easier to remove. Thus, a size of the atomic radius
increases, ionization energy should decrease.

Question:
State the general trend for electron affinity and explain the reasoning behind
the trend
Answer:
Decreases down a column and increases from left to right
As the effective nuclear charge increases, it becomes easier to add an electron
across a series of Adams and from bottom to top of a group. Thus, as effective
nuclear charge increases, the electron affinity should increase.

Question:
