Advanced Neurological and Neuropsychiatric Case Studies: Integrated Pathophysiology and Clinical Reasoning

Document preview thumbnail
Preview 2 out of 14 pages

This course-based case study compilation provides an advanced exploration of neurological, neurosurgical, neurodevelopmental, and neuropsychiatric disorders through clinically grounded scenarios. Emphasis is placed on pathophysiological mechanisms, diagnostic reasoning, symptom interpretation, and evidence-based clinical decision-making. Learners analyze real-world patient presentations involving spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injury, pain mechanisms, stroke, headache syndromes, psychiatric disorders, and congenital neurological defects. The content aligns with Walden University’s scholar-practitioner model by integrating theoretical knowledge with applied clinical insight to support advanced nursing, healthcare, and psychology practice.

, Chapter 15
1. Mr. White, 39 years of age and a construction worker, was admitted
to the emergency department with a ruptured disk. He and another
worker were carrying a 125-pound bag of concrete when his partner
tripped on a rock and fell. Mr. White tried to hold the bag but felt
excruciating pain in his lower back. An x-ray examination revealed a
ruptured disk in L4. What happened to Mr. White?
When Mr. White’s partner let go of the bag of concrete, it caused
undo stress on Mr. White’s lower back. The disk ruptured and
protruded through the spinal canal. This action caused the spinal cord
to compress.

2.Mr. Black was working in his garage when one of the shelves gave
way and landed on his head.
He was brought to the emergency department and diagnosed with a
subarachnoid hemorrhage. What causes subarachnoid hemorrhage?
A subarachnoid hemorrhage occurs when the intracranial vessels
sustain trauma. Signs and symptoms include neck stiffness, Kernig
sign, and low back pain.

3. Why are spinal nerves called mixed nerves?
Spinal nerves are called mixed nerves because they have both sensory
and motor neurons.
