Hema = blood
Anemia = RBC or Hgb is low
• Causes increased cardiac workload, possible murmurs
• s/s = pallor, fatigue, tachycardia, murmurs, growth
retardation
• Management = Transfusions, Rest, fluids, 02 rx low
strenuous exercise Identity of recipient & donor’s
blood is required for transfusions Monitor VS q 15 min.
Use blood within 30 minutes of arrival & infuse over 4 hours maximum
1.Sickle cell = destruction of RBC
a. Both parents must have trait. Causes obstructed vessels, vascular
inflammation
b. S/S = extreme pain, decreased O2, swollen hands/feet, growth restriction,
chronic anemia
c. Want to give IV fluids and manage pain
Sickle cell crisis
• Triggers= Infection, stress, dehydration, trauma
• Vaso-occlusive = Painful episode `
• Complications = CVA/ stroke
• Give fluids, minimize pain, prevent infection, immunizations, possible O2
2.Iron deficiency
a. Most @ risk = children 12-36 months
b. Iron rich foods & vitamin C
c. Iron supplements on empty stomach w/ juice (never milk!!)
