Module 1.1 - Overview of Physiology and Major Systems of the Body

1. A&P Def. & structure of the bones:
A&P: is the study of human body structure; Anatomy: is the study of the body structure,
how is it designed; physiology: is the study of the body functions
Structure of the bones: provides the framework to protect the organs, physiology of the
body depends on the anatomy of the body, with how the organs function, the structure
of the bones basically provides framework of the body; structure of the bones is a
basically a mineral-deposit hardened structure
2. Levels of Organization of the Human Body:
1. Atom: starts at the atom level(smallest unit of matter; e.g. oxygen & carbon)
2. Molecule: atoms combined to form molecule(e.g. CO2, water, glucose)
3. Macromolecule: molecule combine to form macromolecules( much bigger & larger; e.g.
nuclei acids & proteins)
4. Organelles: smallest working structure of a cell(e.g. mitochondria & nucleus)
5. Cell: organelles combine to form cell( smallest living organism, it is the first unit that can
reproduce itself)
6. Tissue: cells combine to form tissue(comprises of groups of cells that perform specific
functions)
7. Organs: tissue combine to form organs(comprises of tissues that perform specific
complex functions; e.g. brain, liver, kidneys; )
8. Organ systems: organs combine to form the 11 organ systems that each perform very
complex functions
9. Organism: 11 organ systems work together to form the organism & make the organism
to survive
3. Chemical level: study the human body at the atom & molecule level
4. Cellular Level: study the human body at the cell level, which is the fundamental unit of life, cell
is the smallest living organism & can reproduce itself
5. Tissue Level: comprises of groups of cells that perform distinct function
6. Tissue Types & What they are:
1. Epithelial tissue:
Functions: secretion & absorption
Characterized by: covers the body surface, lines the internal body cavities,
closely packed cells & very little matrix ( layer outside the cells)
Found in where: single layer, multiple layers, and within glands
Cells’ functions in this tissue type: cells in the epithelial tissue will undergo
continuously to shed dead cells
2. Connective tissue:
