a. Describe one practice area in which MIPS could be used to improve
the quality of care related to your
anticipated future practice setting. Do not discuss your current
practice setting.
b. Discuss two ways MIPS could positively impact the practice area.
c. Describe the role of MIPS in supporting the financial viability of
healthcare providers and organizations and client health outcomes.
d. Examine how advanced practice nurses can contribute to the
development and refinement of MIPS quality measures to ensure that
they are valid, reliable, and meaningful for clients and providers.
MIPS was introduced by Medicare and Medicaid services in an effort to
promote quality care rather than volume. MIPS adjusts a physician’s claim
reimbursement based on performance across 4 categories: quality,
improvement activities, promoting interoperability, and spending (Maganty
et al., 2023). My area of practice as a future advanced practice nurse is
family practice. As APN’s in family care practice, we will take care of
patients across their lifespan. I believe that integrating standardized quality
metrics can assist with chronic disease management, preventive screenings,
and overall patient satisfaction.
Two ways MIPS can positively impact family practice is through prevention,
chronic disease management and effective care coordination. MIPS
encourages FNPs to focus on prevention, early detection, and proactive
management of chronic illnesses by offering rewards for following evidence-
based standards. This leads to better patient outcomes and fewer
hospitalizations. For example, APN’s can keep track of evidence-based
indicators such as patients’ A1c in diabetes management and blood
pressure monitoring in patients with hypertension. Effective care
coordination is also essential as patients can use EHR to share physician
notes, results and current medication lists with other providers in the care
team. This prevents duplicate ordering, effective communication across
providers and promotes patient safety/satisfaction.
MIPS supports the financial viability of healthcare providers, organizations
and client health outcomes by focusing on quality of care rather than
volume of services provided. Providers who provide high quality care can
