Aristotle

- Wanted to explain the world around him and looked how things progress and change
- Empiricist
- This is the only reality that needs explaining
- If an object reached its telos us he would judge it to see if it was good
- The soul is the formal cause of the body,we can't be so without a body and vice versa
- Telos= final goal
- He thought that the goal of humans where they were searching for happiness was to reach a
state of being happy healthy and prosperous

four causes

1- Material cause
- Materials it is made from
- Always had the potential to change
- E.g wood to a sculpture

2- Efficient cause
- What made it occur?
- How does it get from being its potential to its ended-up state?
- eg a Carpenter

3- Formal cause
- What it looks like
- The form it takes we recognise it from our five senses
- Experiences of many chairs, so we know what a chair looks like

4- final cause
- Most important cause it explains the objects telos
- Does it fit its purpose?
