For this week’s assignment I chose an article that discusses something very near and
dear to my heart. I had multiple family members working with hands on with COVID-19 patients
and saw how it affected them on a daily basis. The article I chose to discuss is Feist, C.,
Huffington, A., Marcus, D., & Williams, M. A. (2024, February 22). Do more to support health
workers’ mental health. US News & World Report.

healthworkers-mental-health. This article discusses the impact that COVID-19 had on healthcare
workers and how it still affects them even after the pandemic. Many, if not all, healthcare
workers were not expecting how COVID-19 would affect them and take a toll on them physically
and mentally. The mental health crisis is still a big issue within the healthcare system even
though we are years out of the pandemic. Being a person who uses the healthcare system there
are ways we can help those that are suffering from the mental health crisis.
Premise
The main idea of this article is to show how those with little training are in a constant
state of learning and adapting to the new challenges in their career. This typically leaves people
in a constant state of feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and even burned out from their jobs.
Common signs of burnout are feelings of emotional exhaustion, cynicism, depersonalization,
and low personal accomplishment (Bradley & Chahar, 2020). With this happening many of the
healthcare professionals are practically ignoring their own mental health. These healthcare
professionals are hoping that some sort of change happens so they can receive the help they
need.
