Source C From the diary of Denis Moriarty, an experienced sergeant in the British Army.
He fought for several months at Gallipoli before the troops were evacuated.
Sunday, 25 April 1915. We landed on Turkish soil under terrible fire from the
enemy trenches. Our unit had 17 men killed and 200 wounded. I was in the
open all day and the Turkish snipers kept firing until dawn. My only food for 24
hours was two biscuits and some water.
Saturday, 1 May 1915. The enemy started a heavy artillery attack at 5pm. 5
During the night, thousands of Turks crawled the short distance from their
positions right up to our trenches. Then they attacked, yelling hideously and
throwing hand grenades. Some of our best men were killed.
