, 1. INTRODUCTION:
Language. A single tool which humans use to communicate and express
themselves. Language varies; across cultures, across disciplines, across groups,
across, societies and nations, and across individual identities. It is the thread that
weaves people together in families and indicates our affiliations with specific
cultures, religions, ethnicity and groups. A single language can be used
differently in accordance to the context and circumstances; it depends on socio-
cultural factors such as age, gender, type of career, acceptability to the current
social situation, and location. English, for example, is used differently across
different locations around the world; different dialects co-exist with different
meanings for different words or phrases. This in itself is evident that language
can create communication barriers. To understand the implications of different
languages on the human population, especially in a diverse South Africa, it is
necessary to explore language by viewing it through an African lens. This module
is a journey through the world of South African language and it peers through the
windows of the different ethnic cultures, world-views and religions that exist here.
The purpose of the module is to promote ubuntu and to break down linguistic
barriers through gaining a deeper understanding of how meaning is created and
interpreted in a multi-cultural setting.

1.1. Purpose of the Portfolio:

The purpose of this portfolio is to outline how language and the use thereof
reflects identity, attitudes and worldviews by studying the relationships between
language and the self, language and kin, language and society, and how many is
created and interpreted in the relationship of the self and the other. The portfolio
aims to outline the process of language and how it is learned and used. It aims to
indicate how language reflects personal identity through expression and culture-
specific terminology, dialect and meaning. The portfolio aims to reflect on how
language impacts interpersonal relationships; from the acquiring of a language
through kinship to the use of language in culture-specific social events, and its
impact on the forming of new relationships in a multi-cultural setting. A vision for
ubuntu in South Africa is outlined in the final reflection which indicates the
elements of communal life, integration, empathy and compassion and celebrating
diversity.
