Part 1: Things to consider before outlining your press release
1. Is the new prison program “newsworthy”? Why or why not?
There may occasionally be a response of disapproval from people who are upset that their tax money
is being used in this manner. In severe cases, public outrage can put a program at risk. It is important
to be aware of how the issue is reported in order to avoid causing upset. If the coverage is not reported
in an informed way, it could have an adverse effect.
2. Who is your target audience?
3. How can you tell the story so your audience relates to it? What’s your story-telling strategy?
Surprise your audience! A great way to do this is by using a false start technique. Begin the story in a predictable
manner, but suddenly take it in an unexpected direction at the end. This will leave listeners feeling bewildered and
uncomfortable as you shock them with an outcome that they did not expect.
4. Which facts about the new program are most relevant to your audience? Why should readers care about this
story?
Hepatitis C is often transmitted by intravenous drugs or through exposure to unsanitary medical equipment,
such as those used for tattooing.
5. Which details need to be in the lede paragraph to answer the six key questions?
At present, tattooing in Georgia prisons is not allowed and is not authorized. Inmates are using unsterilized tools
to tattoo themselves and one another. The lack of proper sterilization can lead to the transmission of Hepatitis C
and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
6. In what ways can you consider ethics when writing your press release?
Professional writers have an even more substantial obligation to advocate for veracity, disprove false stories,
and review current accounts to ensure the public has access to dependable data on the internet.
