2015, in the U.S. alone, there were 20 million cases of new STI's. The most
common STI's in the U.S. are: chlamydia, gonorrhea, Hepatitis B, genital
herpes, HIV, human papillomavirus, syphilis, and trichomoniasis. 50% of these
infections occur in young people ages 15-24.



Syphilis - ANSWERa. Causative Agent - Syphilis is caused by a thin corkscrew-
like spirochete called Treponema pallidum (T. pallidum).

penis, meatus, or scrotum.



signs in females- women it is painless, and goes unnoticed if located in the
vagina or on the cervix



after symptoms have gone away tests will show negative



secondary stage of syphilis - ANSWERskin rashes and/or mucous membrane
lesions (sores in mouth, vagina, or anus)



Rashes begin as soon as the primary lesion disappears, or as much as several
weeks after the lesion disappears.



symptoms- include fever, swollen lymph glands, sore throat, patchy hair loss,
headaches, weight loss, muscle aches, and fatigue



after symptoms go away you will still show positive on the test



latent and tertiary syphilis - ANSWERThis stage is often referred to as the
hidden stage because patients will not have any signs and symptoms of the
infection
