Text-Driven Reading Comprehension Lesson Plan

Grade Level: 5th Grade

Text: Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo (Chapters 1-5)

Lesson Objectives: Students will:

1. Determine the theme of the story and summarize key events.
2. Use context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary
within the story.
3. Describe characters and how they change over time.

Vocabulary Acquisition:

The teacher will introduce tier 2 vocabulary words from the book during
group discussion. These words will be written on the whiteboard with the
definitions. A kid-friendly definition will be provided as well as example
sentences using each word. We will discuss the root and suffix of each word
to determine the meaning, as well as context clues within the sentence. The
students will then be asked to make up their own sentences using a
vocabulary word of their choice and will raise their hands to share with the
class.

Materials:

• Because of Winn-Dixie (Chapters 1-5)
• Whiteboard and marker
• Writing journal and pencil

Pre-Reading Strategies:

• Introduce the book Because of Winn-Dixie to students and allow them
to predict what they think the story is about based on the title and the
pictures within the text.
