Question 1
In this essay, I will discuss the writers’ use of linguistic features in the
provided text. In my essay, I will also include an analysis of how
these linguistic features add to the meaning of the text and why
the writer chose to use these to convey the message in this text. I
will further establish the target audience and the context of the
provided text. After this, I will discuss the writer’s use of specific
linguistic features and rhetorical devices and how using these will
help convey purpose and enhance the meaning of the text.
Firstly, I would like to discuss who the target audience of the
provided text would be. The reader of such an article would be an
adult who likes to be up-to-date with current news and even
someone who is following any current and up-to-date political
news.
The context of the text helps to provide the reader of the article
with some kind of background or even helps provide meaning to
the text. In this given text the writer discusses two different political
parties and further discusses briefly any weaknesses and strengths
within each party and discusses how this is a very important
election that is coming up.
Rhetorical devices can be used by the writer of a written piece to
communicate to convince them to view a specific topic from a
very particular viewpoint. The writer may encourage or even use
emotional writing to bring this across to the reader.

The writer of the provided text can also make use of specific
linguistic features to help convey a message and the meaning of

, the text; I will refer to some of these from the text and discuss
them.
The first one that I would like to discuss is the use of the imagery in
paragraph four. The author uses this to create a picture in the
mind of the reader, as stated in the provided text, ‘and its dirty
laundry being aired in a very public manner’ (Text A), one is able
to paint a picture in your mind as the reader of the text of real
dirty laundry being displayed for all to see. The use of the imagery
here helps the author to convey a message of yet more
disappointment coming from the political party, this may make
the reader want to think twice about issues displayed for all to see.
Another example is the use of alliteration, where the first letter of a
word gets repeated in words that follow, the example from the
text that I want to use is, ‘sweet spot with its messaging’. The
author is using alliteration here to enhance the meaning of the
political parties messaging and that it is actually not as sweet as
intended to be, in fact, it has caused the opposite effect.

The author of the article has used jargon to reach the target
audience they intended to, this way the author is further able to
convey the message of the text. Jargon would be terminology
that only a specific target audience would understand. People
outside of this group would possibly need to research or look up
certain words to understand the written text. In paragraph 5 of the
text, the author uses the word ‘partisanship’, the author has
actually used this word twice in the text. A person who follows
political news would understand such jargon. Here the author is
able to convey deeper purpose to the text they have written, the
use of the jargon would also enhance the meaning of the text for
the reader, especially if they understand political jargon.
