Othering means classification of one or more groups of people as others, i.e. not one of us. Exercised mostly in the western world, otherness sort of assumes that the situations in those “other” places as unique to those places. “Otherness” is negative because even when it is used to refer to the positives of “others” it creates mental boundary that bars critical analysis of situations.
