As we used normal column chromatography, the first elution started with the most non-polar pigmen as it can’t attach to the stationary phase, which was Carotene (as we can observe from the structure on page one; carotene doesn't have any charges or O/N molecules). The next pigment was chlorophyll a, which is more polar than carotene as it contains Mg, N, and O, making it more polar.
