Samenvatting (NL)

Jonge mensen, waaronder studenten, voelen sterke behoefte om te presteren en slagen. Het

gevolg hiervan is een stijgend percentage perfectionisme onder studenten. Perfectionisme is te

onderscheiden in verschillende typen en ligt ten grondslag aan verschillende vormen van

psychopathologie, waaronder angststoornissen. Sociaal voorgeschreven perfectionisme

kenmerkt zich door de opvatting dat andere mensen perfectie van iemand verwachten. Het

doel van deze studie is het onderzoeken van de relatie tussen sociaal voorgeschreven

perfectionisme en angstklachten onder studenten en de modererende rol van geslacht binnen

deze relatie. Een digitaal samengestelde vragenlijst is ingevuld door 237 Nederlandse

studenten, gebaseerd op de verkorte versie van de Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale en

de VierDimensionale Klachtenlijst. Uit resultaten bleek dat er een significant positieve

samenhang bestaat tussen sociaal voorgeschreven perfectionisme en angstklachten. Geslacht

bleek geen modererend effect te hebben op deze relatie. Deze bevindingen laten zien dat een

hoge mate van sociaal voorgeschreven perfectionisme leidt tot een hoge mate van

angstklachten. Voor eventueel vervolgonderzoek is het raadzaam om een longitudinaal

onderzoek uit te voeren om het voortbestaan van deze relatie te onderzoeken. Tevens is het

aanbevelenswaardig om gelijke aantallen mannen en vrouwen in de steekproef mee te nemen.

Daarnaast is het belangrijk om perfectionisme mee te nemen in onderzoek naar angstklachten

of angststoornissen. Tot slot is het raadzaam voor hogescholen en universiteiten om een

positief studieklimaat te ontwikkelen voor studenten en duidelijk aan te geven bij welke

professionals studenten terecht kunnen voor advies en hulp.

Abstract (EN)

Young people, including students, feel a strong need to perform and succeed. The

consequence of this is an increasing percentage of perfectionism among students.

Perfectionism underlies various forms of psychopathology, including anxiety disorders.

Socially prescribed perfectionism is characterized by the view that other people expect

perfection from someone. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between

socially prescribed perfectionism and anxiety complaints among students, and the moderating

role of gender within this relationship. A digital composite questionnaire was completed by

237 Dutch students. The questionnaire consisted of the shortened version of the

Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale and the VierDimensionale Klachtenlijst. Results

showed that there is a significant positive correlation between socially prescribed

perfectionism and anxiety complaints. Gender was found not to have a moderating effect on

this relationship. These findings show that higher levels of socially prescribed perfectionism

leads to higher levels of anxiety complaints. In addition, no differences were found between

men and women in this relationship. For any follow-up research, it is advisable to conduct a

longitudinal study to investigate the continued existence of this relationship. It is also

advisable to include equal numbers of men and women in the sample. In addition, it is

important to include perfectionism in research into anxiety and anxiety disorders. Finally, it is

advisable for Universities of Applied Sciences and Universities to develop a positive study

climate for students and to clearly indicate which professionals students can turn to for advice

and help.
