make them. Or discussing, handling…
If you look closely u will see art from different periods => kunst kamers/art cabinets

spaces

2

,Question with many answars
Does it have to be beautiful, certain people? …
Important to consider the context -> its flexible and changes in diff periods

“There is no such thing as art. There are only artiste’” boek: ernst gombrich, the story of art,
2023, p21
-> means that there is no one overarching concept/definition of art, there are artists.

“ art may mean very different things in different times and places… art with a capital A has no
existence”
-> no one definition for art

Does art have to be beautiful? Going to museum to see beautiful things
Idea of beauty also varies in context/place

Some could say this is art and this
not cuz its ugly…

Depends on context

➢ Conception of art depends on historical and cultural context
Italian Renaissance art theory:
Go deeper on the meaning of art; first concept, also important to understand the
following lectures. = concept of disegno

▪ Disegno (it. drawing, design) as a foundational concept. Means drawing or a
designing, it also means a design concept, an idea of an art for example. Related to
renaissance art

-> Disegno refers not only the physical act of drawing but also to the intellectual
capacity to invent a creative design.

▪ Careful study of human anatomy and physiognomy
▪ Use of drawing media to evoke light and shadow and model a three-dimensional figure

3

, (Michelangelo Buonarroti ,Studies for the Libyan Sibyl, ca. 1510-11) this is the study for a real
painting. Really a study of the human body, u can see the muscles… trying to capture it
perfectly. Also light and shadow. -> highly perfectionist. A nude figure, but end result is clothed

This is the final result of the study. U can clearly see the foot study.

Italian renaissance art theory:

During the renaissance, the ability to invent or create, put the artist on a
footing with god, the ultimate creator, and was a means of raising the
status of painting from craft to art.

Concept of disengo in italian, not only to draw realistic, naturalistic figure, nut also to really
design the painting. -> the idea to make the image as a whole, make it coherent, not only
realistic presented.

➔ Jan and Hubert Van Eyck, Ghent Altarpiece, 1432-35

- Technical perfection (oil paint)
- Attention to detail is enormous
- Truth to nature in colors, application of central
and aerial perspective
- Realism invented with symbolic meaning

Mimesis = imitation of nature; imitative representation of
real world
-> this is also an important concept
U can always find symbolic references. Mimesis of
nature

➔ Kazimir Malevich, black squeare 1915
- Technically not complex
- No use of expensive materials
- ‘My child could make that!
-> considered economical art, technical not at all complex; no
expensive material, its just a square. Still its a climax in art
history; and singilaing beginning a new area

And yet, the painting is considered a climax in Western art,
synthesizing centuries of art history, and signaling the beginning
of a new era.
