--> SW staat voor sociale verandering, probleemoplossing in menselijke situaties en de emancipatorische versterking (empowerment) en bevrijding van mensen, met steeds als doel hun welzijn te bevorderen. De sociaal werker intervenieert op die terreinen waar mensen interageren met hun omgeving en maakt hierbij gebruik van theorieën over menselijk gedrag en over sociale systemen. De uitgangspunten van de mensenrechten en van sociale rechtvaardigheid zijn fundamenteel voor het sociaal werk.

SW zal ingrijpen in situaties om een bepaald doel te bereiken (interventies) a.d.h.v. verschillende stappen.
1) Analyse van de situatie : wat is het ontstaan, instandhouding, versterking/afzwakking van het probleem
2) Inventariseren van pluspunten en krachten
3) Doelstelling opstellen
4) Welke interventie is er nodig om situatie aan te pakken
(in praktijk lopen de stappen door elkaar)
Maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen : stellen het SW op de proef. De essentiële vraag daarbij is hoe het SW naar die ontwikkelingen kijkt. (= probleemanalyse) Maar ook hoe het hierop reageert en welke oplossingen SW'ers nastreven.
