What is significant about Desdemona's and Othello's marriage?
Othello and Desdemona are both classified as oppressed in Jacobean society and so they treat each other as equals. It is only when Iago manipulates Othello that we see Desdemona being submissive.
They are a clear example of a healthy marriage at the beginning where they are both equal and how fate can change the dynamic between two people very quickly.

Roderigo is one of the many side characters who are manipulated by Iago's lies and subsequently is asked to do deeds in return of winning Desdemona's "affection and love" back. His name means "famous leader" which ironic because he goes quite nameless in the play except to Iago who uses him as a minion to order around in his evil deeds.

She is duplicitous like her husband but she must live a double life of sorts. Women must be submissive and so does not speak much in front of any of the male characters until she loses Desdemona in the last scene of the play (Act 5 Scene 5). When no men are there, her speech is more confident and comfortable and alike to feminist ideologies of modern day- it should be the husbands fault if women cheat as much as the blame is placed on the woman and not vice versa when a man does it. She is seen as a prototype-feminist and does stand up for what she believes in once she finds the confidence in Act 5 Scene 5 before her death.
