Bay of Pigs (April 1961)

Jan 1961 - relations between Cuba and USA became more strained when US broke off diplomatic relations Exiles from 1959, trained by USA to invade Cuba and begin a national uprising to topple Castro CIA trained exiles, bases set up in Florida and Central USA. Exiles numbered to 1,500 Exiles were met by 20,000 of Castros men. All exiles were killed or captured, made Kennedy look foolish Dec 1961- Castro announced he was Communist

The Crisis

Kennedy called a blockade, came into effect on 24th Oct after Kennedy had given Khrushchev a warning Kennedy ordered air-force to be combat ready; 185,000 troops were moved into Florida; 21,600 long-range bombers Soviet ships sailing to Cuba slowed down and even began to sail in circles Khrushchev sent 2 letters - 2nd one said missiles would be destroyed if the USA guaranteed to leave Cuba alone Blockade removed, sites destroyed, Cuba left alone, Kennedy agreed oct 27th

Losing Soviet Control

Sinatra Doctrine (Oct 1989) = policy that allowed Warsaw Pact states to determine own internal affairs Warsaw Pact Military Threat 1955 = military agreement between USSR and European Soviet States 9th Nov 1989 - East German gov opened up border crossing into West Germany, people started to dismantle the wall October 1990 - West and East Germany formally reunited ; demonstrations in East Germany due to changes to the system of government Nov 4th 1989 = largest demonstration in East Germany's history took place : 1 million people in East Berlin demanding democracy and free elections Gorbachev visited and informed political leaders that Soviet Union wouldn't become involved in it's internal affairs
