Mediatisering als concept van Hjarvard, slaat op het proces van historische transformatie, kan je tegenover mediering zetten wat simpelweg verandering op de korte termijn betekent. Mediatisering is een metaproces van moderniteit en kan je langs en boven andere processen zoals globalisering, individualisering en commercialisering zetten. Je kan een onderscheid maken tussen directe en indirecte mediatisering, bij indirecte gaat het namelijk gewoon over dat het leven in toenemende mate beïnvloed wordt door mediagenieke symbolen en mechanismen, terwijl bij directe een duidelijke verandering zichtbaar is. Mediatisering is een duaal proces, want media zijn instellingen op zichzelf geworden maar hebben ook invloed op andere instellingen.
