CARRINGTON'S UTILITY STUDY GUIDE

A series of guidelines set forth to determine what these health care specialist should and should not do under certain circumstances is known as Scope of Practice

Obtain directions from the primary health care provider regarding the medications

Place the client in a lateral position with the head turned to the side before beginning the procedure.

The nurse gave the med as a chemical restraint to keep the client from leaving the facility against medical advice. The client did not consent.

When using the urgent vs. nonurgent approach to client care, the nurse should determine that the priority finding is 480 mL of urine output in 24 hr because the minimum acceptable urine output in an adult client is 30 mL/hr. This can indicate progression of preeclampsia to preeclampsia with severe features, which requires immediate intervention. Therefore, this is the priority finding.

"I should not receive this medication while I am breastfeeding." "I will need monthly injections of this medication." "I am likely to gain weight while taking this medication." "I should limit my calcium intake while taking this medication."

Gross anatomy (MACROSCOPIC anatomy) involves studying body structures while microscopic anatomy is the study of body structures using a microscope (MICROSCOPIC anatomy). [CP-11/ch1/p7]

- Heart rate, blood pressure, skin color, sounds, capillary refill, edema, history of heart attack or cardiac problems, blood clots in legs? REPORT: Any cardiac problems so they can be monitored during the intraoperative period. The use of cardiac drugs, and the presence of a pacemaker/ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator)

The patient's abdominal incision is draining a small amount of pinkish color secretion. How nurse document this finding on the patient's record?

Advise limiting exposure to the sun. Inform patient of the possibility of gastrointestinal upset. Suggest eating crackers and some juice when taking this medicine.

When administering a new medication to a patient, the nurse reads that it is highly protein bound. Assuming that the patient's albumin levels are normal, the nurse would expect which result, as compared to a medication that is not highly protein bound?

he dosage of medication - ANS medication strength X volume or amount administered unit of measure usually metric system: mg, mL, units drug errors - ANS responsible for up to 7,000 deaths per year -negligence to label -incorrect drug knowledge drug forms - ANS -solids -semisolids -liquids -gases solids - ANS given orally (capsules, tablets) semisolids - ANS creams, foams, gels, ung (ointment), suppositories liquid - ANS solutions, suspension gases - ANS inhalation

which one of the following is prescribed preoperatively for patients scheduled for endometrial ablation - ANS danocrine ( an androgen medication to reduce volume of endometrial layers ) which hormones is responsible for the development of the male sex organs and secondary sex characteristics - ANS testosterone

Before next expected complex, QRS is wide and often the R wave and the T wave are oppositely deflected making it look weird and bizarre QRS is greater than .12

Sinus bradycardia is a heart rate less than 60 beats per minute and originates from the sinus node (as the term "sinus" refers to sinoatrial node).

Check the cord routinely for frays or tearing Consider purchasing a generator for power backup Observe for signs of hypoxia

When using the urgent vs. nonurgent approach to client care, the nurse should determine that the priority finding is tachycardia. Tachycardia is a manifestation of biliary colic, which can lead to shock. The nurse should position the head of the client's bed flat and report this finding immediately to the provider.

Manifestations of bacterial meningitis include increase protein in the CSF, decreased glucose. RBCs can indicate bleeding, however, WBCs are what indicates bacterial meningitis.

When providing client care, the nurse should first use the least restrictive intervention. Therefore, the first action the nurse should take is to provide verbal instructions and emotional support to help the client relax and allow the ventilator to work. Clients can exhibit anxiety and restlessness when trying to "fight the ventilator."

when using the ABCs approach to client care, the nurse should place the priority in the immediate postpartum period on assessing the amount of postpartum lochia. the greatest risk to the client is bleeding and postpartum hemorrhage
