Basic Immunology Second year Laboratory medicine Introduction to immunology Immunology: Immunology is the science that studies the mechanisms by which human body defends itself from foreign substances present in the environment. It is divided into three major parts: 1. Basic immunology. 2. Diagnostic immunology. 3. Clinical immunology. Part I-Basic immunology History: Immunity is derived from the Latin word immunitas and was referred to the exemption or protection ...

This document offers a clear and concise summary of basic immunology, focusing on the essential elements of the immune system and its defense mechanisms. It covers innate and adaptive immunity, antigen recognition, lymphocyte development, immune memory, and the roles of key cells and molecules. Suitable for students in medicine, nursing, and health sciences as a foundational resource or exam preparation tool.

Understanding basic immunology Dr Mary Collins 1 Immunology • Immunology– the study of how the body fights disease and infection • Immunity– State of being able to resist a particular infection or toxin 2 Overview • Function of defences • Immune response to infection and vaccines • Generating specific immunity • Enhancing the immune defences 3 Functions of the immune system Protection • Identify and destroy pathogens • Cancer Housekeepin...

The immune system consists of specialized cells and organs that protect an organism from outside biological effects and from inside changes. If the immune system is functioning properly, it protects the body against microbial infections, destroying cancer cells and foreign substances. If the immune system weakens, it allows pathogens to grow and flourish. Organs of the immune system Central (primary) lymphoid organs These are the sites of maturation of the lymphocytes 1-Bone...

Pref ace Two thousand multiple choice questions that could be asked of a student of introductory human anatomy and physiology are presented in 40 categories. It is assumed that users of these questions are teachers or students who have completed at least part of an anatomy and physiology course that might be offered in the fi rst year of a university degree programme. It is also assumed that they would have access to one of the anatomy and physiology textbooks (or similar) listed in the bi...
