State Crime

are activities perpetrated by, or by order of state agencies e.g.. the government that committed crimes to further their policies. CRIMINAL OFFENCES: genocides, war crimes, assassinations. imprisonment without trial, torture, funding organised crime and terrorist groups, corruption and discrimination. VICTIMS: citizens of the country - those with religious or political views. OFFENDERS: high ranking government officials under orders of the country's regime. LEVEL OF PUBLIC AWARENESS: use of media means it is high as crimes have become so extreme. Seen to be CRIMINAL AND DEVIANT as it goes against natural laws and the moral compass of society.

White Collar Crime

A non-violent crime committed for financial gain. VICTIMS: retired workers. CRIMINAL OFFENCES: computer and internet fraud, healthcare, public corruption, credit card fraud, tax evasion and money laundering. OFFENDERS: people with high status, trusted by the victim, often work in commercial employment and involved in organised crime groups. LEVEL OF PUBLIC AWARENESS: difficult to prosecute as perpetrators us sophisticated means to conceal activities through computer transactions. offender appears as respectful so no suspicion is aroused. Seen as CRIMINAL AND DEVIANT as actions are against the laws and the norms of society.

Technological Crime

Known as cyber crime, where an offence is committed using the internet or other technologies. CRIMINAL OFFENCE: internet enabled fraud, downloading illegal materials, use of social media to promote hate crime. OFFENDERS: anyone with access to the internet, typically younger people. LEVEL OF PUBLIC AWARENESS: was low due to technological elements but is now high due to increased publicity and the number of offences. Some crimes are considered to be CRIMINAL AND DEVIANT but crimes like downloading songs are very common and are not seen as a real crime.
