Benedick

Soldier - values male friendship initially - Witty - enjoys the merry war with Beatrice and the humour of the men - Also starts off fiercely opposed to love - laments the loss of his bachelor friend, Claudio, to love, thinks those in love are foolish - Falls in love through the gulling (see Beatrice points) and is then comically, absurdly in love ('I do spy some marks of love in her', illness, dress etc.). - There are also serious changes - after the wedding he stays in the church with the women, agrees to keep the secret about Hero's 'death', sees that Don John is the culprit, gives up his service to Don Pedro and, most significantly, agrees to challenge Claudio

Hero

- Foil to Beatrice - conventional - Quiet and modest in public but can be witty and bold when just with women or when masked (masked ball, gulling, night before wedding). - Subservient to her father - he tells her to agree to marry the prince and then after the wooing by proxy is given to Claudio - she is never asked and doesn't speak. - Accusations against her deeply distress her - her very name means fidelity and the dramatic irony makes them all the more shocking to the audience. - Her fake death is a way in which her reputation can be restored and she is married to Claudio

Romantic Love

Beatrice and Benedick's cynicism initially, yet their similar views and our sense of their witty spats ironically suggest their compatibility - Love changes them both comically and seriously (see previous notes) - Their love is based on their deep and long-term knowledge of each other - it is not superficial - Hero and Claudio are much more like traditional courtly lovers who have a conventional courtship. - However, we could say that this means that Claudio does not know Hero well enough to believe her and he is willing to treat her cruelly.
