Newton's First Law of Motion | Forces and Motion | Physics
The First Law of Motion: Objects in Motion and at Rest Imagine relaxing on a recliner chair, watching your favorite movie on a lazy Sunday. Then, your mom calls out your name and asks you to run some errands. It may be difficult for you to get up and do the work right away. Similarly, if you're practicing for your 100 meters race on the track and someone suddenly asks you to stop or turn immediately, it may not be possible to do so. Objects tend to continue doing what they're doing, whether it's at rest or in motion, unless an external unbalanced force acts on them. For instance, an object at rest will remain at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion with the same speed and direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. Only an unbalanced force can change an object's state of motion. If an unbalanced force acts on an object at rest, it will move, and if an unbalanced force acts on an object in motion, it may accelerate or change direction. This is the essence of Newton's first law of motion. We can also represent this concept using a simple diagram. If the forces acting on an object are balanced, there can be two cases: an object may be at rest, or an object may be in motion at a non-zero constant velocity in a particular direction. In the first case, the object will continue to remain at rest, while in the second case, it will continue to move with the same speed and direction. The First Law of Motion states that an object will continue to stay in motion at the same velocity and in the same direction. However, this is only true if the forces acting on the object are balanced. In the next video, we will explore a few applications of this law.
