Where are the upland, lowland and glaciated landscapes in the UK?

Upland areas Mostly in the north and west of the UK They are formed of harder rocks such as slate and granite They are cooler and wetter areas with steep gradient Land uses include sheep farming, quarrying and tourism Lowland areas Mostly found in the south and east of the UK from softer rocks such as clay The landscape is flatter with gentler hills and the climate is warmer and drier Land use includes dairy and arable farming and urban areas Glaciated landscapes Mostly found in upland areas in the north west of the UK Ice during the last ice age carved out valleys and deposited lots of material

What is deposition?

When the river slows down and material is deposited, this sediment can build up and create depositional features such as: Flood plain, Levees, Ox-bow lakes, Deltas. Material can be deposited along the coast, when the water loses energy to form landforms such as beaches (constructive waves), spits, and bars.

Coasts: how do erosional landforms (headlands and bays) form?

Headlands and bays form where there are alternating bands of resistant and less resistant rock along the coast The less resistant rock (e.g. clay) is eroded away more quickly and this forms a bay The resistant rock (e.g. chalk) is eroded away more quickly and is left jutting out, forming a headland
