Neoclassicism started in 1750 and ended in 1850 which is known as a time of great change and new ideas. Another art movement during the 18 century was Romanticism which emphasized inspiration. Romanticism started in 1780 and ended in 1830. In my opinion, I believe that Neoclassical art was eàect way of getting political messages conveyed to the people. I think there are great characteristics of neoclassical art that made it a great style to convey governments’, institutions’ and individuals’ messages to the people. “Neoclassical architecture was based on the principles of simplicity, symmetry, and mathematics, which were seen as virtues of the arts in Ancient Greece and Rome”. (Seiferle, 2018). I believe simplicity is a great art style and an important characteristic that help viewers understand the intent of art images. Another great characteristic that makes Neoclassical art the best option to convey messages eàectively is that it tried to capture and carry the same set of standards, as the idealized works of the Greeks and Romans which we all know are the most inÖuenced work of art throughout history. “The primary Neoclassicist belief was that art should express the ideal virtues in life and could improve the viewer by imparting a moralizing message”.”. (Seiferle, 2018). But there were some aspects of this system of art movement I don’t support. For example, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. The rich enjoyed their wealth with other rich people while the poor continued to starve. This was prominent in France. But the aspect that made to believe it was the best art movement to messages eàectively is that they believed that logic and morality should prevail through individual rights, and there should be respect for all. Let’s have a look at some Neoclassicism artwork images. Respects for all was considered, they stood for freedom, equality, justice and for a better life. References Gersh-Nesic, B. (n.d.). Neoclassicism, an introduction. Your writing is at a scholarly level. You have written thoroughly on the subject using citations and references as well as including images. Great job. Just to add a bit to your thoughts: The neoclassical art movement was interested in rising Western society up to the level of the ancient Greek and Roman societies. They saw the ancients as a strong society through their sustainable, beautifully structured buildings, their beliefs, their judicial systems, and essentially the culture itself and they wanted to bring that back. They felt society had fallen out of health and was drowning confusion, Öuà, egocentric ways and wanted to reevaluate what was truly important with a focus on science and math. The artwork itself was created in opposition to the overly decorative (or at least that is how they saw it) styes of Rococo and Baroque. They felt that style of art supported vanity and personal conceit and they really wanted to refocus the art (and essentially their culture) back to the basics of anatomical correctness, clean clear lines, organization, and mathematically sequenced images and structures. They wanted to return to a systematic beauty that they felt was at the heart of humanity. Dr. Binger Neoclassicism, an introduction. (2019). You picked a couple of good examples for your discussion, how do feel they portray your view that neoclassicism was the better media for getting a amessage across? The 18 century brought about sweeping changes in politics, art, and science in Europe, this era came to be commonly referred to as The Age of Enlightenment, this era was characterized by new ideas and ways of doing things, inevitably, this new era also gave birth to two new competing movements in art and architecture – Neoclassicism and Romanticism. It is said that Neoclassicism was heavily inÖuenced by classical Greco-Roman art, while Romanticism was about showing emotions like fear and horror visually (Nieves, 2017). SO in eàect, Neoclassicism art was one that showed rationality, order, and focus, while Romanticism art focused heavily on emotions, hence, I feel that Neoclassicism would be the better style to use to get a message across. Neoclassicism art can also be said to be a visual representation or expression of the new ideas brought in by the Enlightenment, which meant new ways of thinking about how a society should function and run, the art produced in this style strives for clarity and simplicity of the form, color, and line mirroring the simplicity of ancient Greek art and avoiding the high drama and sentimentality that is usually associated with the Baroque and Rococo art styles (“Neoclassicism, an introduction”, n.d.). The most famous example of an art that epitomized the neoclassical style was The Oath of the Horati which was painted 5 years before the start of the French Revolution by French artist Jacques-Lois David. and an article on the Neoclassical Art th/ Movement noted that “three-quarters of the French were illiterate which created an opportunity for art to become a political tool to arouse revolutionary fervor” (“Neoclassical Art Movement, n.d.). By Jacques-Louis David - , Public Domain, That being said, an argument could also be made that Romanticism art style could also be used as a way to get a message across, what better way to get people's attention than to appeal to their emotions?. Case in point is The Third of May 1808 painting by Francisco Goya which was made to provoke outrage at the indiscriminate killing of civilians by French soldiers (Danto, 2007)./ By El_Tres_de_Mayo,_by_Francisco_de_Goya,_from_Prado_in_Google_E: Francisco de Goya derivative work: Papa Lima Whiskey 2 - This Õle was derived from: El Tres de Mayo, by Francisco de Goya, from Prado in Google E:, Public Domain, References Danto, A. I also viewed the most famous artwork 'The Oath of the Horati' by Jacques-Lois David. Neoclassicism was actually an important movement in America which helped modeled itself on the ancient civilizations of Rome and Greece, both architecturally and politically. It is clear how it invokes emotions from the viewer. There were quite a few pieces on both sides, including the famous Lady Leading the People, that I considered but did not because I thought they were pieces after the fact. I think I read too much into the Õrst question of our assignment.
