BUSINESS IN CONTEXT, 8th EDITION – nm nm nm nm nm
TEACHING MANUAL CHAPTER ONE
nm nm nm nm
THE CONCEPT OF BUSINESS IN CONTEXT
nm nm nm nm nm
This chapter explains the ‘Business in Context’ model that is used
nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm
throughout the book. All four contexts are identified; environmental,
nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm
organizational, strategic and functional, referred to as ‘activities level’
nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm
context. In addition, two theoretical framework outlines are offered;
nm n m nm nm nm nm nm nm nm
systems and contingency. Both frameworks have been used to develop
nm nm nm n m nm nm nm n m nm nm
the ‘Business in Context’ model.
nm nm nm nm nm
The model can be used to analyze individual firms and entire industrial or
nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm
business sectors. A useful exercise for students is to nominate a particular
nm nm n m nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm
sector, firm or organization known to them (it could be their college,
nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm
university or their department) and get them to develop an analysis using
nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm
the ‘Business in Context’ model.

Discussion questions and answers nm nm nm
Below you will find suggested answers to the discussion questions set at the
nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm
end of every chapter. It must be stressed that these answers offer guidance
nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm
only and are not intended as ‘model’ answers. It is important that
nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm n m nm nm nm
students think for themselves and many of the questions require them to
nm nm nm nm n m nm nm nm nm nm nm nm
apply the knowledge they have gained from the book to a specific context.
nm nm nm nm nm nm n m nm nm nm nm nm nm
nmWe recognize that such contexts may vary for different groups of students.
nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm
It is more important that students think of the issues in the industry,
n m nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm
business or even national context that is most relevant to them. In some
nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm nm n m n m
cases, a specific answer cannot be given but, where this happens,
