What is the nephron?

Give this one a try later!

Functional unit of the kidney

Name the function of the following:
Vitamin A

,Give this one a try later!

Vitamin A - component of rhodopsin and iodopsin. Important to cell
differentiation and an antioxidant

Name the major chemical buffer systems in the blood:

Give this one a try later!

Carbonic acid Bicarbonate Buffer
Phosphate Buffer System
Protein Buffer System

The capillary network that surrounds the convoluted tubules is called the:

Peritubular Capillaries

Where is the primary location of storage of spermatozoa? This is also where they
functionally mature.

Give this one a try later!

Epididymis

,The enzyme amylase is produced by what organ(s).

Salivary glands and pancreas

What are the stratum basalis and stratum functionalis?

Give this one a try later!

Stratum Basalis (Basal layer) - lower third of the mucosa that is retained
during menstruation and regenerates the functional layer

Stratum Functionalis - layer shed during menstruation and regenerates
from stratum basalis during proliferative period

What does low/high tubular osmolarity mean... low/high plasma osmolarity?

Give this one a try later!

The amount of particles total in the filtrate within the tubules

The amount of particles total in the plasma

What is the uterine cycle? (the 3 phases of menses/proliferative/secretory)

Give this one a try later!

, Proliferatve: happens while the ovary is in the follicular phase. The
increasing levels of estrogen stimulate the growth of stratum functional.
Endometrium becomes more vascular/develops LH receptors.
Secretory: occurs while the ovaries are in the luteal phase. The secretion of
progesterone stimulates dev. of the uterine glands (storage of glycogen).
Endometrium becomes thicker/more vascular and becomes prepared to
nourish growing embryo if oocyte is fertilized.
Menstrual: Result of a fall in estrogen/progesterone levels when corpus
luteum degenerates. The arteries in endometrium constricts, cells in stratum
functionale die, the region is sloughed.

Where are sperm produced within the testes?

Give this one a try later!

Seminiferous tubules

What can increase/decrease GFR (think afferent arterioles)?

Give this one a try later!

In a sympathetic episode, the afferent arterioles vasoconstricts, which
helps to shunt or divert blood to heart and muscles. --> Urine formation
decreases. This increases GFR due to high bp/osmolarity

During parasympathetic regulation, the afferent arterioles will vasodilate
which will reroute blood back to the rest of the body, which will increase
urine formation. This decreases GFR due to low BP/osmolarity.

Who should commonly be in a negative nitrogen balance? Positive?
