Primary Assessment - Answer: -General Impression: done while walking up to pt,
conscious? position? life threats? age, sex, smells, sounds or sights
-Assess Responsiveness using AVPU
-After evaluating responsiveness, if awake introduce yourself, ask for chief
complaint(why they called), and gain consent
AVPU - Answer: -Alert: patient is tracking you as you approach
-Verbal Stimuli: if not alert, introduce yourself, call out to them

-Unresponsive: don't respond to either stimulation
Unconscious vs Conscious Patient - Answer: -unconscious pt check for CAB
(circulation, airway patent, breathing) BEGIN CPR and AED procedure

-E: expose, visualize, palpate the chief complaint
-F: formulate field impression, Mentally summarize what you know so far, discuss what
is going on and what was done
-I: identify pt priority and make a transport decision, critical pt transport immediatly
-Primary Assessment is now done
Administer O2 during...? - Answer: -begin administering O2 during B stage of primary
assessment
Secondary Assessment - Answer: -done after primary is done, one EMT takes history,
the other takes vitals
-first consider what type of patient you have: unresponsive/responsive medical and
major/minor trauma
