Sarah Hill – 175220 Unit 2 – Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques

Undertake titration and colorimetry to
determine the concentration of solutions.
Introduction: In this report, it will show how to correctly prepare
standardized solutions for titration and colorimetry, it will show how
to investigate the concentration of unknown solutions, using
procedures and techniques to accurately determine the
concentration of the solutions, and finally evaluate the accuracy of
procedures and techniques used in titration and colorimetry in
relation to outcomes and suggest any potential improvements that
would make our experiment better.

Titration of Sodium Carbonate solution and
an unknown concentration of hydrochloric
acid.
Risk assessment:
There are multiple hazards and risks when performing a titration
with a group of students in a laboratory, whether it is broken
glassware or chemical spills. When working with glassware there is
the risk of chipped or broken glassware such as burettes, conical
flasks, and beakers, the risk of this is that people can scratch or cut
themselves, this later could lead to potential infections. Another
potential hazard is a chemical spill on the floor or on to a student,
this could lead to spillage and falls, this could then lead to later
complications. Not only could people slip on spilled chemicals but
whilst pouring the hydrochloride acid into the burette this could then
be splashed or spilled onto the student causing corrosive to the eyes,
skin, and mucous membranes, also acute inhalation exposure may
cause eye, nose, and respiratory tract irritation and inflammation
and pulmonary edema in humans. Also, spillages of sodium
carbonate solution can cause irritation of the respiratory tract

leading to coughing, shortness of breath, and also pulmonary edema,
but also eye contact with the sodium carbonate could lead to a
permanent corneal injury. Around a classroom, there are other
potential trip hazards such as student bags and stools that might not
be properly under the desk out of the way. Finally using
phenolphthalein as the indicator, there is also a risk as this is an
irritant and also flammable substance, meaning it must be kept away
from an open flame and you also should minimize contact as much
as possible.

Equipment needed for the titration:
- Hydrochloric acid
- Sodium carbonate
- Phenolphthalein (indictor)
- Sodium hydroxide
- Scale
- Spatula
- Volumetric flask
- Deionised water
- Burette
- Conical flask
- Pipette
- Pipette filler
- Funnel
- Beaker
- Funnel
- pH Meter
- Stand
- Clamp

Method for titration:

A. Calibrate all equipment necessary, this is shown below.
B. Start by weighing out 0.25-0.30g of the sodium carbonate into
a dish.
