A. Three videos:
1. “Building Classroom Community through the Study of Chinese Art and
Culture,” 2nd
Grade

7. “Developing U.S. History Content Vocabulary,” fifth grade

6. “Learning about Cultural Identity,” kindergarten

B1. In the first video that I watched about building classroom community through the
study of Chinese Art and Culture in a second grade classroom I observed social,
cultural, and emotional needs. By putting the students in small groups for this lesson
the teacher is building a strong classroom community which builds culture in her
classroom. I notice in the groups all students are able to talk and give their own ideas
without criticism or judgment from other students in the group. This shows social and
emotional needs being met by building social skills in a small group setting and
meeting emotional needs because as a group they can help eachother out if a student
doesn’t know something they are learning about. She is meeting emotional needs by
making sure all students in the class have the opportunity to learn. If you watch the
video the teacher has a student that doesn’t work well and learns better working solo.
She gives this student an alternative to the group activity that still has the student
learning about the topic but it is an assignment that the student can work on
individually. This is an example of meeting students' emotional needs. The
teacher brings in many different ways to learn about China. She uses art, guest
speakers, food, and music so that every student has a way to learn about what she is
trying to teach about Chinese Culture. She knows that her students all learn in different
ways so she gives multiple learning techniques to teach them. This is an example of
emotional, social, and cultural needs being met.
She does an excellent job of making sure all her students feel comfortable and can have
the opportunity to speak freely. (Building Classroom Community Through the Study of Chinese
Art and Culture 2015)

The second video I observed was about developing U.S. History content vocabulary in a
5th grade classroom. The teacher addressed social, emotional, and cultural needs for
her students in her lesson. She put the students in groups which helps build community
which is looked at as cultural needs, lets the kids work together which helps them
socially, and also by putting them in groups to work together helps with a student that
may not understand something or needs to listen to others answers to form their own
understanding of the topic this is meet students emotional needs. I noticed in one of
the groups the group all gave their ideas of what the description of a patriot was. When
they got to the last students she was having a hard time giving an answer. The
students were all very encouraging and ready to listen even if the girl may not have
had the right answer, this represents both social and emotional need. In this same
group the teacher came over and helped the little girl out. She helped her by reflecting
on the students' own home country and walked her through by asking her how she felt
about her own country, this represented emotional and cultural needs. I noticed as the
little girl struggled with her answer the students didn’t pass judgment or make fun,
they just listened openly. It was mentioned that this particular class was a group of all
English Language Learners. They separated them into their own group so that they
could meet the emotional and cultural needs so that they could all learn the US History
