Precontemplation (Not Ready) - ANS A person in this stage is not seriously thinking about
changing or starting an exercise program. Potential clients in the precontemplation stage do not
intend to start a new healthy behaviour in the near future and may be unaware of the need to
change.
Contemplation (Getting Ready) - ANS People have started to think about exercising or
changing behaviour and have most likely identified a course of action. At this stage, clients align
their intentions to adapt and start the healthy behaviour.
Preparation (Ready) - ANS Clients at this stage are ready to start taking action. They take
small steps that they believe can help them make the healthy behaviour a part of their lives.
Action (Actively Making Changes) - ANS People have begun to take the necessary action, but
not much time has passed since they started making the changes. Clients at this stage have
changed their behaviour and need to work hard to keep moving ahead.
Maintenance (Adherence to Changes) - ANS The person has successfully adhered to an
exercise program for a sustained period, approximately six months or more.
