Management of Difficult Workplace Situations Utilizing Social Emotional Intelligence
(SEI) Power Skills
Clinical nurse leaders arguably are the foundation of clinical workplaces, and these
leaders must possess a range of social-emotional intelligence (SEI) power skills to mitigate
workplace conflicts and manage difficult situations. The five power skills that are the core of
clinical success are self-awareness, self-management, interpersonal communication, executive
function, and social awareness. By understanding and implementing these skills, nurse leaders
can better serve their team, improve job satisfaction, and create a more enjoyable work
environment.
Self-awareness
Self-awareness is a vital building block for social and emotional intelligence, based on
the premise of knowing oneself. More specifically, self-awareness is “the conscious and clear
perception and understanding of one’s own personality, feelings, thoughts, emotions, beliefs,
strengths, weaknesses, character, desires, and motivation” (Western Governors University
[WGU], n.d.). By grasping one’s own feelings, emotions, strengths, and weaknesses, they can
better understand their triggers and how they choose to respond in the workplace. An example of
a leader employing self-awareness in a difficult situation is when a reactive patient is mistreating
the nurses, swearing at them, and being noncompliant with their care. The leader could
immediately act on impulse and enter the patient’s room defensively, prepared to be abrasive
back to the patient, or they could check their own emotions, get a greater sense of understanding
of their own feelings in the moment, and then proceed to enter the room with a calm and level
