The Risk-Need-Responsivity Model

Abstract

Over the years, there has been a considerable evolution in regard to the treatment of

sexual offenders. Fundamentally, a number of practice as well as theoretical treatment models

have been established, revised, refined and proposed over time. Lately, the major approach,

backed by research, abides by certain effective correctional intervention principles, follows

skills-based orientation, cognitive-behavioral whilst plainly targeting risk factors empirically

connected with sexual /violent offenders and with recidivism, with a purpose of lessening the

risk of re-offending. Cognitive-behavioral treatment concentrates on altering behavior, cognition

and affect by utilizing a skills-oriented tactic as asserted by (Hanson et, al., 2007). The overall

goal of this approach is lessening the risk of reoffending, and entails certain features as well as

methodologies on treatment providers. In this case, particular principles of intervention are

employed in guiding treatment in order to get the best out of treatment. The Risk, Need and

Responsivity (RNR) model is an appropriate approach commendable for adoption in

rehabilitations as it explores the causes of recidivism among sexual/violent offenders and hence

lowers the risk.
