Introduction:
The following assignment aims to explore the environment in which Betty’s tea room operates in,
how they have responded to these factors and how it may have an impact on them in the future.
This information will be shown through the use of an analysis of the internal and external
environment as well as their competitive environment. This assignment will also include a SWOT and
porter’s five forces analysis, and will include aspects such as Betty’s market structure, and supply
and demand.
Internal Environment:
A company’s internal environment is their environment within the cooperation such as their current
employees, corporate culture, events, CSR, ethics, and management. All of which have an influence
on decisions made within the business.
Corporate culture:
Corporate culture is what defines employees behavior, their relationship and how they interact with
other employees, events, culture, and the overall working environment. The four types of corporate
culture include: clan culture, adhocracy culture, market culture, and hierarchy culture.
Employees working for Betty's can participate in activities where
they can include themselves in charity work. As shown in the
Photo found on their website, employees are happily
volunteering together planting trees in their local woodlands.
This shows how employees are not competing against each
other and share the same values in supporting their local
community. Therefore, they have a good relationship with one
another and are not competitive.
Communication within the company is good as they state on the
website "our culture is based on the us all being able to work
together as peers with a clear understanding of the direction the business is taking and the role we
each play in delivering it." This implies that they work well as a
team, and they are not under large amounts of stress that can
impact the work they produce.
Impact:
This shows that Betty's has a good corporate culture, where
employees get along, interact well with each other, and include themselves in events outside of
work together. This positively affects the business as employees are more likely to enjoy work, get
along with coworkers, hence, being more productive, committed, and willing to express new ideas
and opinions. Instead of having employees fighting for a job or promotion and over working
themselves, this often leads to a lack of productivity as they are not happy in the working
environment.

CSR:
CSR stands for corporate social responsibility, this is how businesses incorporate and take into
account environmental and social issues on operations and interactions within the organization and
their stakeholders. Examples of this would include carbon emissions, recycling, and water use. An
ideal company following the CSR regulation would contribute towards being socially equitable,
economically efficient, and environmentally sustainable while aiming for economic growth and
making a profit.
Betty’s practices CSR
through the policies they
have in place, for example:
their anti-slavery and human
trafficking policy. This
ensures that slavery and
human trafficking appears
nowhere along the lines of
their supply chains or within
the business itself. If a case
of human trafficking or
slavery is identified, Betty’s
will not tolerate it and the
situation will be dealt with
seriously.
Betty’s has also been known to practice
CSR as they are an environmentally
friendly business. This is shown through
them being certified as a carbon neutral
business through their carbon neutral tea
and coffee range. They also promote
recycling to the local community and plant
trees in their trees for life campaign. They
have done ‘trash for treasure’ recycling
campaigns in schools to promote this
which encourages younger generations to
take action on saving the environment.
Their trees for life campaign aims to plant
trees in their local community, this shows
commitment in incorporating
environmental issues in their business
practices and that they are continuously
taking into account the environmental
impact of their business running and the products they produce.
Impact:
Having these policies and commitments in place, it should act as a performance driver as they are on
the same page working towards the same goals within the business. This will encouraging
innovation, and bring employees and stakeholders together to contribute in meaningful projects,
making the company a safe, enjoyable environment to work at.

Ethics:
An ethical business is a company that follows appropriate practices and policies in terms of sensitive,
controversial topics. This may include how they respond to discrimination, bribery, illegal activity
within the company, CSR, slavery, human trafficking and more. An ethical business should encourage
whistleblowing on those who whiteness unethical practices within the company’s operations as well
as fair trade.
Betty’s show that they are an
ethical business due to their
whistleblowing policy stated on
their website. This is where they
encourage employees and other
stakeholder groups to speak up if
they whiteness or experience
unethical operations or practices
connected to Betty’s. This may
include scenarios such as
discrimination, over billing
customers, lying, stealing, taking
someone else’s credit and so on.
Betty’s has also shown ethical practice
through fair sustainable trade with
their suppliers. This means they pay
fair wages for their work as well as
providing good working conditions for
their suppliers working in developing
countries. This implies that the
relationship between their suppliers
working in farms are treated equally
and are just as important to the
business as other partnerships.
Impact:
Betty’s being an ethical company encourages employees to be more productive as they are working
in a healthy, honest environment. As the company is acting morally, it also uplifts employees overall
mood and are optimistic, this leads to better employee to customer interactions as they will be more
welcoming and friendly to clients. This makes the working environment more positive.
