Immerse yourself in this extensive 205-page compilation of lecture notes from acclaimed U.S. breast surgical oncologist Dr. Laura Esserman, ideal for medical students, residents, and practitioners delving into the intricacies of breast surgery. Beginning with foundational anatomy—detailing the breast's extent from the second to sixth ribs, lateral sternal border to anterior axillary line, and extensions to the clavicle, lower ribs, and latissimus dorsi—the notes emphasize surgical relevance, such as the axillary tail often mistaken for lymph nodes or lipomas, and cross-sectional views for precise mastectomy planning. Progressing to clinical applications, it covers benign conditions, malignant pathologies including breast cancer diagnosis and staging, operative techniques like lumpectomy, mastectomy variants (simple, radical, skin-sparing), axillary lymph node dissection, sentinel node biopsy, reconstructive options (implants, flaps), complications management, and multidisciplinary care integrating oncology, radiology, and pathology. Enriched with diagrams, case studies, and evidence-based guidelines, this resource empowers you to master exams, surgical skills, and patient management for superior outcomes in breast health.

second to the sixth ribs and extending from the lateral border of the sternum

• Actually, a thin layer of mammary tissue extends considerably further, from t
clavicle above to the seventh or eighth ribs below, and from the midline to t
edge of the latissimus dorsi posteriorly. This fact is important when perform
a mastectomy, the aim of which is to remove the whole breast.
• The axillary tail of the breast is of surgical importance. In some normal subjec
is palpable and, in a few, it can be seen premenstrually or during lactation.
• A well-developed axillary tail is sometimes mistaken for a mass of enlarged
