Education technology is the process where teachers and learners use technological tools to help them achieve desirable knowledge, skills, attitudes and values. All countries around the world have education goals which must be achieved by students at the end of school life. Technological tools provide the medium through which the goals are acquired. Use of technology in education is not an option for any country. Economic growth is assessed using technological tools. Security of the world is monitored using technology. Agriculture, Communication, transport, entertainment etc are fast changing due to technology. These areas are key career opportunities for students in universities. Countries must invest heavily in integrating technology in curriculum delivery and management. However, laws that govern internet use must be established by various countries to protect citizens from moral degradation cultism and devil worship. The effects of technology on education
1. Introduction
Education technology is the process where teachers and learners use technological tools to help
them achieve desirable knowledge, skills, attitudes and values. All countries around the world
have education goals which must be achieved by students at the end of school life. Technological
tools provide the medium through which the goals are acquired.
Examples of technological tools include: televisions, smart phones, laptops, computers, digital
cameras, LCD projectors, data storage devices, DVDs and memory cards among others.
According to cognitive theory of multimedia learning proposed by Richard E. Mayer and others,
the human brain takes in and process information using several channels depending on how
information is presented. The theory asserts that people learn more from words and pictures than
from words alone (Richard, 2005a)
In this theory, knowledge is represented and interpreted through cognitive channels Visual or
pictorial and Auditory-Verbal. The pictures or visual images and words we select in passing
information influences how the information will be processed.
Why technology in schools
Technology is useful in financial management to ensure all cash inflows and outflows are
accounted for. The school managers are able to track fee collections and make important
decisions. Parents are able to monitor their children’s fee balances from their homes.
Technology has been used in managing school discipline. Digital applications have been
developed to track reporting and exiting school where parents receive Short messages (SMS) via
their phones. Schools have integrated CCTVs in schools to manage movement in schools and
check on accountability and service delivery.
How education technology influences learning outcomes
When ICT is integrated in teaching and learning process , learning becomes more interesting and
more appealing to learners. The images, pictures, animations, simulations, cartoons, videos when
integrated in the learning process motivate and capture learner’s attention more than lecture
method. Technological tools improve the learning process by aligning the learners mind to real
world.
Technology promotes communication and collaboration between learners, teachers and parents
where they share knowledge.
Technology promotes enquiry and exploration among learners who are more active in using
digital devices. Learners are more eager to use the tools and can easily manipulate them to
achieve desired objectives within a shorter time.
Use of technology promotes creativity and imagination when frequently used. Learners and
teachers can discover new ways of achieving desired objectives.
