SHOULD HAVE + V3
Meaning: A regret or a mistake — something right that wasn’t done
Positive Examples:
I should have studied more for the exam. (I didn’t study and now I regret it.)
She should have called her mom. (It was the right thing to do, but she didn’t.)
Negative Examples:
You shouldn’t have lied to your friend. (Lying was wrong — regret or criticism.)
He shouldn’t have driven so fast. (It was dangerous — a mistake.)
COULD HAVE + V3
Meaning: A missed opportunity — it was possible but didn’t happen
Positive Examples:
We could have won if we tried harder. (It was possible to win, but we didn’t.)
She could have gone to Harvard. (She had the chance, but didn’t go.)
Negative Examples:
He couldn’t have known about the storm. (It wasn’t possible for him to know.)
They couldn’t have finished without help. (They needed help — it wasn’t possible alone.)
WOULD HAVE + V3
Meaning: An imaginary result in the past — usually with “if”
Positive Examples:
I would have helped if you had asked. (But you didn’t ask, so I didn’t help.)
They would have come if they’d known. (They didn’t know, so they didn’t come.)
Negative Examples:
She wouldn’t have left if you’d arrived on time. (She left because you were late.)
We wouldn’t have believed it without proof. (We needed proof to believe it.)
