, Question One OR Question Two
Question 1
As the famous aphorism by Oren Etzioni goes, “AI is a tool. The choice about how it gets
deployed is ours’’. This dynamic software is increasingly transforming the daily path of
people through a series of applications such as online assistants and personalized
directives providing expert views. Technology is slowly shaping our world into what it is
today but can this modification known as “AI’’ dominate our lives? This essay will highlight
the reasons as to why AI detection should be stopped in universities.
Extract A refers to AI as ‘’problematic’’, why so? The start of such automated systems
brought about a buzz among the people, bringing in excitement as well as concerned
individuals. AI has reached a stage where human labour is barely needed anymore. As
we can see now AI is being used in universities to check the clarity of student’s work.
Yes, it may have been helpful for university professors to single out plagiarists but we
need to realize that AI is a system made by us humans and it may have glitches and other
technical malfunctions as the extract says. This can result in students being falsely
accused of academic dishonesty and can potentially jeopardise their degree.
As simple as 12x12 we instantly pull out a calculator to find the answer, this goes to show
that we are so reliant on digital equipment for simple problem solving tasks, with AI being
in the picture and at the access of just a push of a button, this means we are now
demonstrating a lack of diligence towards our work and causes us to neglect crucial
responsibilities. According to many students now, achieving high-quality results can be
attained by using AI but it surely will lack credibility. AI detection tools can call out those
who have been misusing it but can also falsely accuse an innocent learner.
As a student studying at The University of South Africa, I have had the fear of being held
accountable for using AI in my assignments, due to the lack of accuracy the software has
to identify credibility of work. Based on my own encounter, I once submitted an English
assignment that was based on a comprehension passage, we were told that we should
list all references to avoid being accused of plagiarism. Every website that I used was
given at the end of the assignment, regardless of my efforts my turitin score was a high
67% which meant I was in the danger zone. Weeks went by and I felt extremely
apprehensive about my assignment. Eventually an announcement was made that turnitin
was giving wrong readings to the assignments, and I gracefully secured an 86% score.
This is a paradigmatic example of the risks of relying on AI for important matters, a student
could have been wrongly reprimanded for a glitch in the system.
