Rhonchi .....ANSWER.....low-pitched, coarse, loud snoring sound.
Usually caused by secretions in bronchial airway
Wheeze .....ANSWER.....continuous musical sound; heard in
patients with asthma
Crackles .....ANSWER.....continuous popping. Patients with
atelectasis or heart failure
Coarse crackles .....ANSWER.....faint crackling; pneumonia
Barrel chest .....ANSWER.....emphysema
pectus excavatum .....ANSWER.....sunken sternum
scoliosis .....ANSWER.....s-curve of spine, makes inhalation difficult
kyphosis .....ANSWER.....hunchback

normal lung sounds .....ANSWER.....clear or bronchial (adult/older
child) vesicular (young adult)
bronchophony .....ANSWER.....abnormal transmission of sound
from the lungs. Test- auscultate lungs, say "99" should not be
able to hear; abnormal- clearly hear '99'
Dullness .....ANSWER.....occurs over a distended bladder, adipose
tissue, fluid, or a mass.
Tympany .....ANSWER.....empty, hollow areas
Thoracic expansion .....ANSWER.....examine chest movement,
should be smooth and even. Note any accessory muscle or
labored breathing.
Tonsil assessment .....ANSWER.....DO NOT want them to meet in
mid-line
cyanosis in Africans .....ANSWER.....gray skin around mouth eyes
appear gray/bluish
