Management Summary

This report takes a closer look at Green Technology within the Hospitality Industry.
In order to come up with relevant conclusions and recommendations the research is based on the
research questions shown below.

Descriptive research question:
What understands the hospitality industry under green technology?
Explorative research question:
What is the influence of green technology developments on the business model of a company in the
hospitality industry?

In order to be able to answer the research questions, individuals, data sources and written
documents are used and certain data selection methods like conducting an interview, asking
questions, data sources and content analysis are applied. A case selection plan has been set up to
determine the cases and their respondents.
The interviews have been conducted either via Skype or face-to-face. After having completed the
interviews, transcripts are made from the record of the interview. Using the transcripts codes are
formulated and structured into main categories. The codes then are compared in order to find
similarities and differences. Further this leads to an axial coding process which is visualised in several
core and explicit tree diagrams including an overview in regards to three core concepts; Hospitality,
Business Model and Green Technology. The core concepts are explained underlined by sub-aspects.
Furthermore relations between the core concepts are explained and visualised and used in order to
conduct the analysis of the four given cases.
As a result of this analysis the research questions and sub-questions are answered and
recommendations are formulated for the Holland America Line. At last, validity and reliability of the
research are discussed.

However research shows that green technology can have certain positive impacts on a company in
terms of amounts of waste, workplace, costs such as energy costs due to lower consumption and
image. At the moment renewable energy accounts, according to ‘Hotel Energy Solutions’ for: ”8 % of
the total energy used in the European Union”, however goals have been set to: “ increase to 20 % by
2020.”
Currently the EU-Action Plan for energy names the hotel sector: “as having potential to achieve 30 %
savings on energy by 2020.” (Hotel Energy Solutions, 2013)

Taking a closer look at four different companies increases the reliability of this research as different
points of views and plans are being discovered. Furthermore it can be said that a future research
would be very interesting to follow as finite resources are running out and the need for renewable
grows.
