, Executive Summary
The purpose of this report is to assist the executive team of Northern Metals Corporation
in making a sustainable and socially responsible decision regarding compliance with new
environmental regulations. The two proposed solutions—installing air scrubbers or
converting the smelting furnace from coal to natural gas—both achieve regulatory
compliance but differ in long-term sustainability and social impact. This report applies
the triple bottom line (TBL) framework to evaluate how each option affects people, the
planet, and profit.
Based on the financial and nonfinancial analysis, converting to natural gas presents the
most sustainable and socially responsible alternative. Although the initial investment is
higher, this option reduces long-term environmental risks, aligns with future regulations,
and improves corporate reputation. Additionally, it enhances community relations by
lowering local emissions and supporting cleaner air. Implementing this option also
demonstrates the company’s commitment to social change by promoting public health
and sustainable industrial practices.
Recommendations for the executive team include integrating TBL metrics into decision-
making, conducting stakeholder engagement initiatives, and fostering a culture of
sustainability through employee education. These steps will not only ensure compliance
but also position Northern Metals Corporation as a leader in ethical and sustainable
smelting operations.
