AP Psychology - Module 9
Biological psychologists - ANS-Study links between biological and psychological
processes.
Dendrite - ANS-A neuron's bushy, branching extensions that receive messages and
conduct impulses toward the cell body.
Cell Body - ANS-The cell's life support center.
Nucleus - ANS-contains the genetic material of the cell.
Axon - ANS-the neuron extension that passes messages through its branches to other
neurons.
Axon Terminals - ANS-Are the hair like ends that receive the message.
Myelin Sheath - ANS-a layer of fatty tissue layer that the insulates the axons and
speeds their impulses.
Action potential - ANS-a brief electrical charge that travels down an axon.
Refractory period - ANS-The resting period after the neuron fires.
threshold - ANS-The level of stimulation required to trigger a neural impulse.
All-or-none response - ANS-the neuron's reaction to firing or not firing.
Synapse - ANS-The gap between the axon tip of sending neuron and the dendrite/cell
body of the receiving neuron.
Neurotransmitters - ANS-chemical messengers that cross the synaptic gaps between
neurons.
Reuptake - ANS-A neurotransmitter's reabsorption by the sending neuron.
Acetylcholine (ACh) - ANS-- Enables muscle action, learning and memory
- Lack of it can cause Alzheimer's Disease (ACh neurons deteriorate)
