WHY SCIENCE IS NB:
• Learn about t he universe & understand
• Based on idea that humans are born with deductive powers used to discover info about universe
- Deductive : Reasoned logically
PRINCIPLES OF SCIENCE:
hypothesis - a tentative explanation for an observation that
may be rejected on the basis of future investigation.
NATURE OF SCIENCE:
• Scientific claims are subject to critical peer review &
repeatability of observation & experiments
• Explains natural world using evidence from natural world
• Non-dogmatic
• Ideas developed through reasoning
• Correcs itself
• Theories are Central to scientific thinking
DARWIN'S EVOLUTION THEORY:
A species is a population of organisms that interbreeds and has
fertile offspring. Living organisms have descended with
modifications from species that lived before them. Species who's
individuals are best adapted survive; others become extinct
HOW LIVING SPECIES ARE CONNECTED TO EXTINCT SPECIES:
• Darwin recognized separate animal groups have basic
structures in common (homologous structures/homologies)
even though modified to perform different functions.
HOW LIVING SPECIES ARE CONNECTED TO SIMILAR SPECIES LIVING NEARBY:
• Ancestral stock, members of species moved to different environments & characteristics that allowed them to adapt to
changing circumstances were species that lived long enough to produce offspring. Body plans became modified &
new species were born - ADAPTIVE RADIATION
• Morphological divergence - development of different structural characteristics in organism from same ancesror.
Homologies have certain features in common each other & ancestral stock - divergent evolution, enabled
descendants to fill wide variety of ecological niches.
