Warm Up Questions - nursing

1 You are caring for an un-helmeted motorcycle rider in the ICU. You administer pain medication to your client
as they have an obvious femur fracture. At the same time, the trauma team in the room notices that the
clients neuro status has deteriorated. The client no longer is opening their eyes, they have no verbal response
and they are presenting with decerebrate posturing. The team decides to intubate the client. You know you
must give a paralytic and a sedative medication to this client before they are intubated. You have orders to
give etomidate (a sedative) and succhinylcholine (a paralytic). The bed scale says the client weighs 187 lbs.
The doctor calls out the etomidate order at 0.3 mg/kg via IV push. The vial states the concentration is 2mg/ml.

A) What is this clients GCS?
B) How many milliliters of etomidate will you give? Round to nearest tenth.
The MD yells out to give 0.6mg/kg of the succhinylcholine to the client. You look at the vial. The
concentration of this drug is 20 mg/ml.
C) How many milliliters of succhinylcholine will you give? Report answer to nearest tenth of a milliliter

2. You have another client in the ICU. This clients blood pressure is elevated, and their heart rate is dropping.
A head bleed is suspected. The team orders mannitol to be given to decrease the clients ICP. They want you
to give 2 g/kg over 30 minutes. Your client weighs 165 lbs. You know the concentration of the mannitol you
have on hand is 0.5g/1 ml.

A) How many milliliters will you give this client?
B) What is the rate of infusion you will have to program onto the pump?

3. You walk into your clients room and you count 25 gtt/min in your drip chamber. The tubing drop factor is 15
gtt/ml. What’s the rate of the infusion?

4. Who am I? This drug is an anticholinergic. It is used to treat symptoms of COPD and asthma. It is used via
nebulizer or as an inhaler. It opens up the medium and large airways in the lungs (it is a bronchodilator). Side
effects of this medication are a fast and pounding heart, along with potential for difficult or painful urination.

5. ABG Ǫugstion. What blood gas problem does this client have?
pH: 7.55
CO2: 26
HCO3: 22
