Summary “Wonder”
Wonder, written by R.J. Palacio, is about a boy named August. He is ten years old and he is small for
his age. He lives with his parents and sister Via in North River Heights in Upper Manhattan.

His face is different from other faces because he has a medical condition, called the Treacher Collins
syndrome. His family and friends call him Auggie. August has never been to school before because he
has had many surgeries, twenty-seven. He has been homeschooled by his mum. At the moment he is
going to school because his next surgery is probably in about a year.

When August was a little boy, he met Zack, Alex and Christopher. At the moment they are still his
best friends. Before he was going to school, he met the school director, Mr. Tushman. August didn’t
want to go to school because he was scared that other people would look at him. Mr. Tushman said
to a few kids they can give August and his mom a tour of the school. He met a lot of friends for
example Summer and Jack. With Jack, he had a lot of fun.

A lot of classmates ignored and bullied him because his face was different from other faces. They
thought the disease of August was contagious, but Summer tried to stop them. At the Halloween
party, Jack started bullying August together with Julian. August wanted to go home because of this.
Moments later Jack heard a lot of sad things about August and gave him a bitch clap. He was by the
side of August and tried to make it right with August. Julian was suspended for a short time. The
bullying got worse, after which August was told that their dog Daisy had died.

At the end of the year, August went on camp with his class. He heard Julian didn’t go, so that was the
reason August wanted to go. On this camp also other schools were there. The camp lasted four days.
On the last night, it ran out of control. August and Jack were attacked in the woods by seventh
graders led by Eddie. August friends helped him to stop it. After the summer holidays, August heard
that Julian would not return to his school. August’s family also got a new dog, named Bear. And
August got a medal called the 'Henry Ward Beecher Medal'. His mom was very proud of her son and
called him a Wonder.

The book is divided into eight parts. Each part is told by someone else. The I-perspective starts with
August and ends with August. This was done by the author to look at the story from different
perspectives.
