1. Description of Issue, Indicator, and Focus
The approved transcultural nursing issue is high rates overweight and obesity
among the Hispanic population. This is a major concern because Hispanics are ranked as
second nationally with 78.8 percent of all Hispanics being classified as overweight or
obese. Moreover, over the 78.8 percent considered to be overweight, 52 percent are
confirmed to be obese. In terms of sub-groups, children that are aged 15 years and below
are obese that is attributed to the widely held cultural belief that a thicker child is a
healthier child. The health dangers associated with obesity and overweight cannot be
overemphasized. From diabetes, heart related diseases such as damage to the nerves,
kidney failure, blindness and stroke.
The approved Healthy People 2030 Leading Health Indicator include focus on
risk factors as well as behaviors in relation to increased levels of obesity among
Hispanics; deal with issues that are of national importance in relation to the transcultural
nursing issue (obesity among the Hispanic population); identify and address issues that
ought to be of high priority for public health (how obesity among the Hispanic population
impacts public health); identify evidence-based intervention strategies designed to elicit
the will to make healthy decisions; and identify and deal with the factors that contribute
towards increased rates of obesity among Hispanics such as high levels of health
disparities (lack of access to quality healthcare and lack of health insurance).
For starters, an estimated 27 percent of children from the Hispanic population are
classified as being uninsured. In terms nutrition, malnutrition, which is the excessive or
inadequate intake of specific nutrients is seen as a persistent issue among the Hispanics.
