,1 Week 6 - Emotion
1.1 Lecture 1
Emotion Generation Theories
• Explain
– physiological reaction (e.g., racing heart)
– behavioral reaction (e.g., fight-or-flight response)
– subjective experiential feeling (e.g., “I’m angry!”)
• Main disagreements
– timing
– is cognition required (or is it automatic)
William James
• “It is not that we see a bear, fear it, and run. We see a bear and run, consequently we fear the bear. Our
mind’s perception of the higher adrenaline level, heartbeat, etc., is the emotion.”
• Assumptions:
– Emotions result from bodily sensations
– If you take away the bodily state, you take away the emotion
– There is a system from which the sensations emerge → autonomic nervous system
– There is a system that interprets the sensations → brain (cortex)

Figure 1: William james theory

Autonomic Nervous System: Regulates internal bodily states
• Parasympathetic: homeostasis (rest & recovery)
• Sympathetic: action (fight or flight)

2

, Figure 2: Autonomic nervous system

Autonomic Specificity: Different patterns of ANS activation should lead to different emotional experiences
James vs Lange
• William James (USA): Different patterns of ANS activation should lead to different emotional experi-
ences
• Carl Lange (Denmark): Different patterns of ANS activation should lead to different emotional experi-
ences

Figure 3: James – Lange Theory

Walter Cannon
• “These changes in the body are, each one of them, directly serviceable in making the organism more
efficient in the struggle which fear or rage or pain may involve; for fear and rage are organic preparations
for action, ...”
• Critique:
– Physiological responses are too diffuse
→ similar ANS responses for fight – flight (anger vs. fear)
– Insufficient innervation to have conscious differences in emotions
– ANS responses are too slow for emotional responses
